Dear Phillips Families,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year, our first official year launching as Phillips Magnet Elementary School!!  It is a very exciting time for the students, families and staff of Phillips Magnet School as we begin this year. Teachers have been hard at work all summer preparing hands on, rich learning experiences that will bring our magnet school theme to life. In addition to core content in math and language arts, your children will be engaging in units that incorporate elements of our LEAD magnet theme:

We are fortunate to have an awesome team of educators at Phillips and we are happy to be welcoming a few new members to our team. Elizabeth Gonzalez will be joining us this year as our Instructional Coach supporting teachers in developing magnet theme units for students. We have three new classroom teachers joining our team as well. Stephanie George in 1st grade,  Magen Edwards in 2nd grade and Paige Simmons in 3rd grade. We are also welcoming a new speech/language specialist, Joan Lord, who comes to us with many years of experience working with students in Sonoma Valley Unified School District. I am very happy to report that Rich Whitall will be back at Phillips as our school counselor this year. Silvia Villalobos will be joining our team of instructional assistants.

Please take note of a few important pieces of information as we start the year:

First, all students will be provided free breakfast and lunch this year at Phillips. We are one of four schools in Napa where lunch will be provided at no cost to ALL students who would like to eat a school lunch. The quality of NVUSD school lunches has improved greatly over the last year and our school lunches provide a tasty and healthy option for our students. It is often said that there is no such thing as a free lunch, but this year at Phillips, there is!  Also related to lunch, students will have a 30 minute lunch break within that school day on early release days this year (that means every Wednesday and all other early release days this year). Please plan to either have your child eat a school lunch or you may send a lunch to school with your child. We will no longer serve lunch after school on short days, but within the school day instead.

Second, our NVUSD nutrition and wellness policies call for us to model healthy living and eating for children at school. To that end, I will be asking all families to think of healthy ways to celebrate such special occasions as birthdays or other events at school. Please do not send cupcakes, cookies, candy or other sweet treats with your child on his or her birthday. I will be working with a group of parents to brainstorm fun, non food related ways to celebrate at school. We will share out ideas early in the year.

As always, I am here to serve you, your children and our school community. If there is anything I can do to improve you or your child’s school experience, please share your ideas with me. It is my sincere honor and priviledge to be part of the Phillips Magnet School community and I look forward to a successful year of learning and growing together.
